The Connection Between Health and Loss--My Personal Story
Tuesday, January 22, 2019 by Dee Lundgren MA, LPC

Tragedy brings some surprising losses—often including health issues.

It is common for grieving people to experience lowered immunity. That’s why it is so critical to practice good self-care including wise food choices.

After I lost my son, within a few years my health began to worsen. I developed some chronic painful conditions.

It took me awhile after not feeling well to go to the doctor. My primary care doctor referred me to a specialist who referred me to another specialist who then referred me to another specialist. Every doctor prescribed a medication that didn’t seem to help, but which left me with troublesome side-effects. Doctors would then prescribe a new medication to combat the unwanted side effects—I had a drawer full of prescription bottles.

I got really discouraged so I pleaded with God to show me what to do. I didn’t want to go through the rest of my life with low energy, pain, and on several medications. And the prospect of living with constant pain frightened me.

Later a friend encouraged me to see an alternative health care provider. What I learned at the first appointment brought hope.

The hard part was the changes I needed to make to rid my body of toxins. But I was desperate enough to do things differently.

The most difficult change was to nix my Diet Coke habit. It had been my favorite beverage for decades. I decided to go cold turkey. For a month I had severe and unrelenting headaches. I felt in a small way like an addict in withdrawal. But the headaches passed and now I was ready to tackle other needed changes.

Next, I bought a juicer and began juicing vegetables. After the first month, I abandoned the juicing because it was so time consuming. I compromised and started drinking powdered organic greens. I think it tastes awful, so I guzzle it down.

I also started drinking more clean water. This helped to flush out fat-soluble toxins. It also helps me get more steps in as I visit the restroom often.

Through a series of small adjustments, I stopped eating almost all sugar. I added healthy oils like organic coconut oil, olive oil, and ghee. Most of what I eat doesn’t come from a box. I made these changes over the span of four years.

What I noticed was that I had more energy and no pain. Also, my taste buds changed so I don’t crave unhealthy foods. And I feel way too good to go back to my old ways.

The condition of our bodies does affect our emotions. Wishing you good health especially if you have experienced loss.

You surely know that your body is a temple where the Holy Spirit lives. The Spirit is in you and is a gift from God. You are no longer your own. (1 Corinthians 6:19)
